Explores a selection of works by William Shakespeare, including a careful reading and interpretation of representative tragedies, comedies, and histories. Examines formal as well as thematic elements of the selected works as well as historical influences.
Pre-Requisites Both of these groups:
1.One of these two: EAP 0099, ENG 0099 (Minimum grade: 1.67 GPA Equivalent)
And
2. Any one of these three: READ 0093, READ 0094, READ 0099

Major Content Areas
Shakespeare’s Comedies, Histories, Tragedies, and Later Plays.
Background: Shakespeare, Renaissance Drama, Stage Conventions, Social Context.
Learning Outcomes
Demonstrate familiarity with the development and diversity of the theatrical and poetic works of Shakespeare.
Identify themes of Shakespearean comedies, tragedies, histories, and romances.
Recognize the formal and generic conventions characteristic of Renaissance drama as well as Shakespeare’s innovations.
Appraise a sampling of critical, theatrical, and practical approaches to reading and reciting Shakespeare.
Describe the multicultural influences on Shakespeare’s work and its consequent effect on cultures globally.
