ENG 2252 - The Novel
3 Credits
Explores novels of the 19th through 21st centuries, including the origins, conventions, and transformations of the novel form. Students will also study the novel as an agent and product of its historical and cultural era, especially with regard to differences among groups that have suffered discrimination and exclusion.
Pre-Requisites Both of these groups:
1.One of these two: EAP 0099, ENG 0099 (Minimum grade: 1.67 GPA Equivalent)
And
2. Any one of these three: READ 0093, READ 0094, READ 0099

Post-Modernist Novels by diverse writers that reflect and produce changing meanings of groups and identities
Contemporary or Graphic Novels by diverse writers that reflect and produce changing meanings of groups, institutions, and/or power dynamics in contemporary culture
Learning Outcomes
Describe and discuss novels that express the experience and contributions (political, social, economic, cultural) of the many groups that shape societies and cultures, in particular those groups that have suffered discrimination and exclusion
Utilize writing skills and apply an understanding of literary techniques and conventions to critical writing about novels in order to understand the development of and the changing meanings of group identities represented in novels.
Demonstrate awareness of the individual and institutional dynamics of unequal power relations between groups represented in novels.
Analyze their own attitudes, behaviors, concepts and beliefs regarding diversity, racism, sexism, and bigotry as they relate to assigned novels.
