ENG 2251 - Special Topics in Writing
3 Credits
Provides guided practice in developing and revising writing of a specific genre (e.g. poetry, memoir, play, screenplay, literary journalism, short fiction, creative nonfiction). Assists writers in developing their own approaches to a single genre in addition to learning about the stages of development applied to a particular piece.
Pre-Requisites Both of these groups:
1.One of these two: EAP 0099, ENG 0099 (Minimum grade: 1.67 GPA Equivalent)
And
2. Any one of these three: READ 0093, READ 0094, READ 0099
OR
ENG 1108
Major Content Areas
Theory and initial staging.
Elements of the genre and initial drafts.
Restructuring, presentation, and final drafts.
Learning Outcomes
Create discipline-specific documents that employ effective techniques for specific writing situations.
Engage in guided revision and/or writing workshops.
Demonstrate an understanding of the elements and terminology of a specific form of writing (poetry, creative nonfiction, screenwriting, etc.).
Demonstrate critical reading, interpretation, and writing skills pertaining to a specific form of writing (poetry, creative nonfiction, screenwriting, etc.).
Apply drafting, revision, and editing skills to a variety of writing activities.
Evaluate their own and others’ work using specific guidelines and criteria.
Demonstrate discipline-specific knowledge of audience and rhetorical situations.
