ENG 2240 - Representations of the Body in Literature and Culture
3 Credits
Takes the human body as its central theme and explores that theme through literature, history, and film to reveal the complex interactions of diversity, especially race, power, and justice in the US, and persistent structural racism embedded in those relationships.
Pre-Requisites Both of these groups:
1.One of these two: EAP 0099, ENG 0099 (Minimum grade: 1.67 GPA Equivalent)
And
2. Any one of these three: READ 0093, READ 0094, READ 0099

Identify communication and relational skills necessary for living and working effectively in a racially, culturally, ethnically, and linguistically stratified society with historic and ongoing practices and structures of exclusion.
Perform close analysis of literature, understand and identify the historical and contemporary systemic structures of racism that sustain social, political, economic, and/or environmental inequities, particularly for Black, Indigenous lands and people, and other communities of color in literature.
Describe and identify in literary texts and films the individual and institutional dynamics of unequal power relations among racial groups in the United States and how inequalities maintained by redefining race and other social identities and structures.
Understand and identify the historical and contemporary systemic structures of racism that sustain social, political, economic, and/or environmental inequities, particularly for the bodies of Black, Indigenous lands and people, and other communities of color.
Examine significant challenges of and contributions to literary texts and films about the body by people in the United States who have experienced racism and other forms of oppression such as sexism, classism, ableism, heterosexism, transphobia, antisemitism, and Islamophobia.
