ENG 1140 - Introduction to Literature
4 Credits Introduces students to the methods of examining and understanding poetry, drama, novels, short stories and creative nonfiction.
Pre-Requisites Both of these groups: 1.One of these two: EAP 0099,ENG 0099 (Minimum grade: 1.67 GPA Equivalent) And 2. Any one of these three: READ 0093, READ 0094, READ 0099 OR ENG 1108

Learning Outcomes Recognize the difference between (and characteristics of) diverse literary genres (such as fiction, poetry, drama, etc.).
Use a variety of literary concepts (such as theme, metaphor, plot, character, etc.) in an analysis of texts. Demonstrate an introductory awareness of critical theories that can be useful for understanding literary texts. Describe how concerns in literature reflect the changes, patterns, and/or values of a given culture.
