SOC 1126 - Sociology of Deviance
3 Credits
Examines sociological theories explaining deviance, its pertinence to the construction of social order as well as identity, and the application of these theories to the problems of crime, drug use, and mental illness. This course also examines the relationship between creativity and deviance.
Major Content Areas
Theory and Method.Issues of deviance: (crime, drug use, mental illness, creativity). Changes in perceptions of social deviance.
Learning Outcomes
Understand how social norms play a role in defining deviance and deviant behaviors.Analyze selected examples of social deviance. Articulate the causes, consequences, and change agents for each selected example of social deviance. Describe a variety of sociological theories and explanations for patterns of social deviance. Apply a sociological lens to understanding the self and others in relationship to social statuses involving social deviance.
