READ 0090 - Introduction to College Reading and Writing



5 Credits
Introduces the beginning college student to the demands of college reading and writing through the close study of diverse texts and the production of short essays and other academic writing. Includes attention to English grammar in context as neededand explicit instruction in strategies for vocabulary development. Prerequisites:

Pre-Requisites READ 0090

Major Content Areas
Pre-reading strategies (i.e. background building, skimming, previewing).

Reading-to-learn strategies (i.e. annotating, notetaking, outlining, summarizing).

Levels of comprehension: Literal and inferential.

Development of college vocabulary strategies.

Introduction to a process approach to writing.

Academic writing (i.e. topic sentences, coherence and focus, academic voice, fluency.

Editing for common writing errors (i.e. sentence boundaries, shifts in tense and person.

Learning Outcomes
Demonstrate improvement in metacognitive skills, in reading fluency, and in the ability to read for sustained periods of time.

Select appropriate reading and learning strategies for a specific text.

Demonstrate comprehension through reading-to-be learn strategies.

Demonstrate an increase in college-level vocabulary and in the use of various strategies to handle unfamiliar words.

Generate academic writing through invention, drafting, revision, and editing.

Demonstrate an understanding of organizing principles in both reading and writing.

Exercise proofreading and editing skills.

Analyze and respond to texts critically, creatively, and personally.
