PHYS 1023 - Descriptive Astronomy Lab

1 Credits
Explores astronomy concepts using simulations and observations. This is an optional lab course that students can take to enhance their understanding of concepts presented in PHYS 1022 - Descriptive Astronomy . This lab will meet the lab science requirement.

Pre-Requisites PHYS 1022 , MATH 0840

Major Content Areas
Motions of the Earth, Moon, Sun, planets, and stars.Kepler’s laws.Stellar properties and the H-R Diagram.Measuring distances in the universe.Conditions necessary for life in the universe.Physical phenomena that astronomers use to make observations (electromagnetic radiation, gravitational waves, etc.).Astronomical instrumentation like telescopes and spectrometers.Locating and tracking objects in the sky.

Learning Outcomes
Observe and explain motions related to objects in the universe and the consequences of those motions.Explain the characteristics of various objects in the universe.Explain the phases of the Moon and what causes them.Explain why the Earth has seasons.Explain Kepler’s 3 laws of motion.

Explain the characteristics and evolution of stars and where they fall on the H-R diagram.Explain the various ways and the limitations of how we obtain information about the properties and location of objects in the universe.Report the location and motion of objects in the sky through direct observation.Explain what some of the conditions for life are in the universe.
