MUSC 1144 - Broadway Musicals

Studies Broadway Musicals from 1880 to the present day. Open to all students interested in expanding their knowledge of Broadway Musicals. The class will include viewing recorded and live performances of Broadway shows. Students may be expected to attend one show of their own choice. The cost of this performance will be at the student’s expense.

Learning Outcomes
Describe the basic elements of a musical theater production (i.e character development, voice types, sets, costumes) Examine the history and development of musical theatre as an art form. Compare and contrast major composers/lyricists and their contributions to the musical theatre genre. Analyze and synthesize observations from a live performance of musical theatre. Examine the development and proliferation of Broadway Musical performance centers across the globe (London, China, South America, etc.) Analyze and synthesize the role of globalization and world cultures, and their impact on the creation of domestic, regional, and global music cultures in Broadway Musicals.
