MATH 1107 - Mathematical Foundations
4 Credits Includes the topics: analysis of the problem solving process; sets and number systems; operations, properties, and computation with the real numbers and their classic subsets; number theory; decimals, ratio, proportion, and percents; statistics; probability; measurement; relations, functions and patterns; algebra models; geometric shapes; and applications. This course can be used for prospective elementary education majors and liberal arts students. Learning Outcomes Apply the concepts of number theory, estimation, mental math, calculators, algorithms, manipulatives, and models to formulate and solve a variety of problems
Demonstrate the ability to work cooperatively in groups and independently to learn mathematics
Analyze, compare & state similarities and differences between modern and historic numeration systems
Formulate and solve problems whose solutions require spatial sense
Identify relations and functions and explain their similarities and differences
Create models that demonstrate the operations, properties, and uses of whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, integers, and irrational numbers; and solve algebraic equations
Apply the algorithms of the base ten number system to other bases
Apply Polya’s four-step problem solving process to a problem situation
Identify patterns and sequences, including arithmetic and geometric sequences
Collect and interpret data represented in different ways
Measure and interpret measurements of a variety of two- and three-dimensional objects
Demonstrate and use counting techniques, such as permutations and combinations, in the study of probability
State the differences between empirical and theoretical probability and apply it to real life situations
