HSER 1117 - Mental Disorders Through the Life Span



3 Credits
Introduces an overview of the range of mental disorders throughout the lifespan. Disorders covered include mood disorders, anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, substance disorders, personality disorders, and disorders in children and the elderly. Students will learn to identify signs and symptoms of each disorder. They also will learn basic skills and therapeutic treatments that effectively help individuals who have mental disorders.

Identify signs and symptoms of the more common mental disorders they are likely to encounter in human service settings

Demonstrate knowledge in areas of appropriate treatment and effective responses with individuals with mental illness in human service settings

Recognize myths and biases regarding mental illness and how these affect their interactions with individuals with mental illness

Identify the major types of disorders listed in the Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM-IV)
