GEOG 1211 - Introduction to Geographic Information Systems



4 Credits
Instructs the use of digital data storage, retrieval, manipulation, analysis and display of spatial and temporal data using Geographic Information Systems(GIS) technology through a combination of class presentations and laboratory exercises. Both general theory and specific application with respect to GIS will be addressed as well as the present application of GIS in various industries. This is a lab science course.

Learning Outcomes
Demonstrate an understanding of the definition and basic principles of GIS; the use of modern computing technology to deal with the storage, retrieval, display and analysis of spatial data. Central components are the ability of GIS systems to produce maps of data in spatial databases, and the use of GIS to perform different types of spatial analysis, for example the combination of several different types of data through the use of overlays, and performing operations such as buffering.

Analyze through lab exercises the testing of cause and effect through environmental modeling efforts with an emphasis on geospatial analytical tools.

Demonstrate use of GIS technology from data input through spatial and temporal analysis and output.

Evaluate the utility of cartographic tools for output map presentations.

Appraise the required components of a GIS system (hardware, software, and data) and how they work together. This includes an understanding of the particular concerns related to spatial and temporal data, and alternative methods of data storage and analysis.

Identify the diverse range of GIS applications in planning, market research, environmental management, etc.
