ENGR 1702 - Climate Crisis: Implementing Solutions
4 Credits Introduces students to renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, as essential in addressing climate change caused by fossil fuel consumption. Students will explore innovative solutions, including the electrification of transportation, energy efficiency and conservation strategies, and the critical role of energy storage in promoting renewable energy adoption. Through hands-on experiments including use of solar panels and wind turbines, students will gain practical experience. Examine solutions using ethical frameworks to evaluate societal benefits and understand civic and ethical responsibilities

Current climate crisis caused by use of Fossil Fuels.
Electricity: Basics of Electric Power, the Grid and its Stability, and Storage.
Various generating systems such as Wind, Solar, Nuclear Power, Hydroelectric systems.
Topics such as electric transportation and innovations, LEDs, motor-driven systems, conservation in agriculture, AC in a hotter world, and others.
Evaluation of various solutions using Ethical Frameworks and Engineering Ethics.

Learning Outcomes Describe the current state of technology related to climate change, its challenges, and identify opportunities for sustainability through technological advancements.
Identify drivers of behavioral change to incentivize the adoption of new technologies and energy use, and articulate personal ethical views for combating climate change through individual behavior and choices.
Demonstrate understanding of scientific theories through experimentation and data analysis.
Evaluate and communicate experimental findings.
Describe and evaluate renewable energy resources, the basis of harnessing energy from them, the importance of conservation, value created for customers, utilities, and the grid energy system, and monitor ongoing developments and breakthroughs.
Identify and apply personal, professional, and civic responsibilities in implementing climate solutions using ethical frameworks, and communicate energy-related policies derived from these considerations, and by becoming an informed and engaged citizen.
