EAP 0090 - Introduction to Academic Reading and Writing for English Learners
5 Credits Introduces multilingual students to the demands of college reading and writing. Students develop their writing, grammar, reading, and vocabulary strategies while gaining an awareness of college expectations of students and the resources available to help them. Intended for intermediate students whose native language is not English and whose college assessment results suggest that further development of English reading and writing skills is necessary before attempting college-level English courses.
Placement Level EAP 0090: Intro to College Reading and Writing
Major Content Areas Reading Strategies and Skills (pre-reading; choosing reading styles/strategies appropriate for various text types and purposes; recognizing and understanding cohesive devices and rhetorical patterns; identifying main ideas and supporting ideas; annotating; developing reading fluency). Vocabulary Skills (dictionary strategies; using context clues and affixes/roots to guess/infer word meaning; developing individual vocabulary learning strategies; identifying parts of speech; increasing overall academic vocabulary). The Writing Process and Paragraph/Essay Organization (prewriting, drafting, revising and editing; developing topic sentences; choosing relevant support and transitions; writing short introductions and conclusions; writing in narrative, descriptive and expository genres, including summaries/reactions to academic texts; editing strategies). Language Use/Grammar/Mechanics (subjects and verbs; sentence structure; trouble spots with verb forms and tenses; paragraph form, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling; common individual trouble spots). Strategies for Being a College Student (using campus resources; using essential technologies; developing academic habits.
Learning Outcomes Demonstrate basic understanding of the writing process. Apply basic organizing principles to paragraphs and short essays. Apply grammatical and mechanical rules to writing, and identify/correct patterns of errors in one’s own writing. Demonstrate basic word processing/technological skills. Respond clearly to readings by summarizing and reacting to texts in writing. Increase reading fluency. Increase college-level vocabulary and use of vocabulary strategies. Demonstrate awareness of college expectations and use of campus resources.
