COMM 2240 - Intercultural Communication

Explores factors that influence communication between individuals of different cultures. In our global society we are increasingly called upon to communicate in a variety of intercultural contexts. Students will develop an understanding of the relationship between cultural orientation and communication behaviors. Identifying their own cultural biases and assumptions will help students increase their awareness and tolerance of individual and group differences. Students will learn to demonstrate cultural sensitivity in interpersonal contacts and identify skills for interacting with people from culture groups other than their own.

Learning Outcomes
Identify and articulate the impact of culture on norms, beliefs and values of various people groups. Participate actively in small and large group activities and exercises. Demonstrate appropriate communication behaviors in classroom activities and interactions. Explain and evaluate cultural influences on identity development. Synthesize information from readings, class discussion and course activities. Evaluate their own cultural assumptions and biases and assess the connection between these and the communication behavior of others and themselves. Demonstrate understanding of basic intercultural communication theory
