BIOL 1111 - Medical Terminology

Introduces students to medical terminology, including word elements (roots, combining forms, prefixes and suffixes) and how they are used to build words. Emphasis will be on understanding definitions, correct spelling, proper usage and pronunciation. Students will be able to use terms correctly in medical reports and health care settings. This course provides a foundation for coursework in science and health.
Major Content Areas
Construction of medical terms using word elements: Major roots, prefixes, and suffixes of Latin and Greek words used in the medical and related professions, including terminology of human body organ systems, disease conditions, drugs, diagnostic and surgical procedures.
Learning Outcomes
Identify, define and spell medical terms, including word elements and abbreviations. Demonstrate comprehension of medical terms, word elements and abbreviations when reading materials, such as medical documents. Demonstrate understanding of medical terms, word elements and abbreviations by using them properly in context. Construct appropriate medical terms using word elements. Demonstrate ability to determine meanings of new words using knowledge of word elements. Demonstrate correct spelling and pronunciation of medical terms.
