ART 2208 - Art and Museums in the Twin Cities
3 Credits Introduces students to the rich and diverse arts venues in the Twin Cities, various museum display practices, and the complicated politics of exhibiting cultures. The class will meet both on campus and at various local museums, galleries, and/or art centers. Students are responsible for own transportation. Independent visits to art exhibits outside of class are also required. Students should budget approx. $75 for entrance and parking fees.

Learning Outcomes Identify the various local arts venues in the Twin Cities and explain each one’s various specialties and types of exhibits viewed at each. Review, analyze, and critique, both orally and in written form, art works and exhibitions viewed. Explain the various methods of organizing works of art for display and the pros and cons of each method. Demonstrate understanding of the importance of preserving and exhibiting art and the issuessurrounding museum acquisitions and works disputed provenance and/or ownership. Demonstrate understanding of practical issues and media-specific challenges of putting works of art on display and creating a cohesive exhibit. Apply critical thinking to understand the complex cultural, religious, and political issues surrounding exhibiting works of art from various cultures.
