ART 1109 - World Art
3 Credits Surveys major works in painting, sculpture, architecture, calligraphy, and decorative arts from non-western cultures around the world dating from prehistory to the present. Art from Pakistan, India, Southeast Asia, China, Japan, the Islamic world, the Americas, Africa, and the Pacific will be studied. Both the styles and methods employed in the creation of the works of art and the cultural, spiritual/religious, societal, economic, and political philosophies that influenced them will be studied and students will learn to recognize and appreciate cross-cultural differences and similarities.

Learning Outcomes Write a brief formal analysis of a work of art Analyze/critique the display of art forms in a museum setting Analyze the relationship between art and life in historical and cultural contexts from around the world dating from prehistory to the present Use proper art historical terms to discuss works of art Explain the ways in which art expresses the ideas of diverse cultures around the world from prehistory to the present Identify major works of art, artists, and artistic styles from around the world dating from prehistory to the present Explain the significance of works of art from around the world dating from prehistory to the present Explain the various cultural, spiritual/religious, societal, economic, and political factors that have influences artists and their work from prehistory to the present
