ART 1100 - Introduction to Art
3 Credits Explores the visual arts of a wide range of peoples, cultures, styles, movements, and media, as well as the various cultural, religious, economic, and political factors related to their creation. Major works of painting, sculpture, architecture, and decorative arts from prehistory to the present will be studied. This course is open to all students and meets the Minnesota Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB) 8710.3200, Subp. 3, Standard L 1, 2, 4, Visual Arts.

Learning Outcomes Write a brief formal analysis of a work of art Analyze/critique the display of art forms in a museum setting Use proper art historical terms to discuss works of art Explain the significance of works of art in terms of the styles and methods employed in their creation Explain the various cultural, religious, economic, and political factors that have influenced artists and their work Analyze the relationship between art and life in historical and cultural contexts Identify major works of art, artists, and artistic styles Explain the ways in which art expresses the ideas of diverse cultures
