ENG 1130 - Writing and Research For the Professions
3 Credits Emphasizes critical audience analysis of professional texts across the disciplines, at least one book length, resulting in a professional research proposal, feasibility study, or report that reflects analysis and synthesis of multiple sources, persuasion, and students’ mastery of professional and audience analysis, business writing, researching, and evaluative skills.
Pre-Requisites ENG 1108 with grade of C or better.
Major Content Areas Strategies of audience analysis using text analysis (case studies, journals, and/or other documents equal to a book length text.Construction of internal and external proposals (workplace and grant), feasibility studies, and/or recommendation reports. Development of professional communications (emails, letters, and memos), et al. Research strategies and evaluation of sources.Development of an effective thesis. Documentation and citation using appropriate methods. Techniques for revising and editing.
Learning Outcomes Develop a document that addresses a specific problem or issue in a way that takes into account audience needs and perspectives. Demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving skills useful in a variety of professional contexts. Demonstrate discipline-specific knowledge of audience and rhetorical situations.Create discipline-specific documents that employ effective techniques for specific writing situations. Engage in guided revision and/or writing workshops. Identify, summarize, evaluate, and synthesize material from diverse sources, culminating in a professional paper demonstrating research techniques. Construct logical and coherent arguments that analyze professional texts. Demonstrate an understanding of authority, point-of-view, audience awareness, audience analysis, and individual voice/style in writing. Use syntax and diction appropriate to academic disciplines and the professional world. Apply factual information to a given problem in a manner that is relevant, clear, comprehensive, and conscious of the bias in information selected.
